Contest Your Traffic Ticket (Plead Not Guilty)

Court Appearance and Extension Dates

The court does not currently offer “Walk-In” hearings. All court appearances must be scheduled in advance by contacting the court. At this time, Night Court is not an option.

If you wish to enter your plea in front of a judge, you must reserve an arraignment hearing date to appear in person. If you choose to enter a plea of “Not Guilty” in person, a future trial date will be scheduled for both you and the officer to appear in front of a judicial officer.

To request a in-person arraignment for your Traffic citation, you may contact any of the following:

Most Extension requests can be made online, in person, by phone, by mail, or via email.

  • The “promise to appear” date written on your citation is permitted a onetime 60-day extension. (no fees applied)
  • A Traffic School completion date extension is permitted a onetime 30-day extension. (no fees applied)
  • Existing Payment Plans are permitted a onetime 30-day extension. ($30.00 fee applied)
  • Any additional request(s) for an extension can be submitted in writing with form SB-16350.
DMV Hold on My License

I have a DMV hold, what does that mean?
When you do not take action on your ticket by the due date, it puts you in a failure to appear status. Once this occurs, a failure to appear hold is placed on your California driver’s license by the court. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can suspend your driver’s license unless you take action on the ticket.

Can I pay online?
To remove the hold, you have the following options:

Paying the full amount owed on your citation will immediately remove the hold.
Pay Now

Submit form SB-16351 either in person or by mail.

Request a court appearance date with a court representative. Your request can be made by mail, email, or in person.

Payment Options and Information

If you intend to pay the amount due on your case, and your citation does not require a mandatory appearance, you may do so on or before the appearance date that appears at the bottom of your ticket. Once the full amount due has been paid, the violation is considered paid and the resulting conviction will be placed upon your driving record, if it is a reportable offense.

Proof of Correction

Proof of correction violations (or “fix-it tickets”) may be dismissed if the violation is eligible, and has been marked “Correctable” by the issuing officer. Proof of correction must be presented to the court, along with the required dismissal transaction fee ($25) for each violation.

If the violation involves registration, proof of insurance or proof of a valid driver’s license, the court staff or DMV may verify and sign off the correction.

For all other correctable violations, the vehicle must be inspected by a law enforcement agency. An officer will sign off the back of your citation, and the signed off citation must then be submitted to the court with the payment of fees on or before the appearance date on your citation. Please note that some agencies have a service to sign off on a correction. (Government Code 68084)

You may submit proof and pay by mail or in person at the clerk’s office.
Correctable violations cannot be paid online unless paid in full without providing corrections.

Traffic School Information

In addition to the fine owed on the violation(s), a $55 Traffic School processing fee must be paid to the court prior to attending a Traffic School course. This fee is separate from the registration fee paid to the Traffic School.

If any of the following applies to you, you are not eligible to attend Traffic School:

  • You attended for a previous violation that was committed within 18 months of your present violation.
  • If you have a Class A license and were driving a commercial vehicle when you were cited.
  • You were cited speeding more than 25 MPH over the posted limit.
  • Non-moving violations do not require Traffic School attendance.

A list of approved Traffic Violator Schools can be found on this page:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/olinq2/welcome.do

Once you have successfully completed the Traffic School course, the school will electronically send a certificate of completion to the court on your behalf for further processing.
